Education

There is a reason a student in Jaipur, Ranchi or Kochi will spend two years preparing for an entrance exam whose only prize is a seat in the capital. Delhi is where Indian law is argued, drafted, challenged and reported. The Supreme Court of India, the Delhi High Court, the Bar Council of India, the Law Commission, the National Human Rights Commission, the Competition Commission and the head offices of almost every major Indian law firm sit within a forty-minute radius of one another. A first-year student can sit in on a constitutional bench hearing on a Tuesday morning and be back for an afternoon class.

That proximity converts into things a syllabus cannot deliver. Internships are easier to get because partners are physically reachable. Guest lectures are delivered by people who argued the case you read last week. Judicial-services aspirants find mentors who cleared the same exam three years earlier. Policy-facing students walk into ministries and regulators for research assignments. This is the compounding advantage that keeps demand for law colleges in Delhi far ahead of supply, year after year.

But that same demand is exactly why most aspirants approach their college shortlist the wrong way. They collect a list of famous names, apply to all of them, and discover in August that they have no seat and no fallback. This guide is structured differently from the usual ranking listicle. It starts with the arithmetic of available seats, then sorts every realistic option into three tiers, and ends with a shortlist you can actually build in a weekend.

Know More: Best Law Colleges in Delhi: Courses, Eligibility, Entrance Exams & Career Opportunities

The Seat Math Nobody Shows You

Rankings tell you which college is better. They do not tell you how likely you are to get in. For that you need seat counts, and the seat counts in Delhi are smaller than most families assume.

National Law University Delhi admits roughly 120 students a year to its five-year BA LL.B. (Hons.) programme, with a small additional intake for its newer B.Com LL.B. (Hons.) course. The Faculty of Law at Delhi University runs a very large three-year LL.B. across its three centres, but its five-year integrated seats number in the dozens, not the hundreds. Jamia Millia Islamia admits a single compact BA LL.B. cohort. Add them together and the entire government-backed five-year integrated capacity in Delhi proper is smaller than the intake of one mid-sized engineering college.

Against that, CLAT alone draws well over sixty thousand registrations a year, and AILET draws tens of thousands more for a fraction of the seats. This is the single most important fact when you compare the best law colleges in Delhi NCR: the difference between the top three and the next fifteen is not a difference in quality alone, it is a difference in probability.

The table below puts the four anchors of Delhi legal education side by side on the metrics that actually drive an admission decision.

Table 1: Delhi’s core law institutions at a glance (2026 admission cycle)

Institution

Entrance Route

Indicative UG Intake

Indicative Fee (Full Programme)

NIRF 2025 Law Rank

National Law University, Delhi

AILET

~120 (BA LL.B.)

~Rs. 21 lakh (5 yrs, incl. hostel)*

2

Faculty of Law, University of Delhi

CLAT (5-year); CUET PG (3-year LL.B.)

~57 per integrated programme; 900+ in 3-year LL.B.

Rs. 18,030 total (3-year LL.B.)*

Not in top 10*

Faculty of Law, Jamia Millia Islamia

JMI Entrance / CUET

Single BA LL.B. cohort

~Rs. 2.62 lakh (5 yrs)*

8

GGSIPU-affiliated Law Schools

IPU CET / CUET

Largest seat pool in Delhi

Rs. 80,000–Rs. 1.5 lakh per year*

22

Geeta Global Law School, Geeta University (Delhi NCR)

Merit + Interview; National Scores Also Considered

BA LL.B. and BBA LL.B. cohorts

Published on the University Fee Page*

Not Ranked in NIRF 2025 Law

*Fee figures, intake numbers and ranking placements shift each cycle. Students who add AILET as an afterthought in November almost never convert. Students who plan it as a parallel track from August frequently do.

Placement outcomes are among the strongest in the country, with median packages for the BA LL.B. batch consistently in the high teens in lakhs per annum and recruitment from the top tier of Indian law firms. Teaching runs through the Campus Law Centre in North Campus and two additional law centres, with a culture that leans towards litigation, judicial services and civil services rather than corporate placements. Ranking agencies place it inconsistently. IIRF put it at 7 nationally in 2025 but the alumni network across Delhi’s bench and bar is unmatched.

Faculty of Law, Jamia Millia Islamia

Jamia holds NIRF 2025 Law rank 8, admits through its own entrance test alongside CUET, and charges among the lowest fees of any top-ten Indian law school. It is a particularly strong fit for students drawn to constitutional law, criminal law and public-interest litigation. The two exams are one week apart, which makes a combined preparation plan entirely feasible — but only if both forms are submitted on time.

Table 2: Law entrance exam calendar for 2027 admissions

Entrance Exam

Registration Window

Exam Date

Institutions It Opens

CLAT 2027 (UG & PG)

3 Aug 2026 – 31 Oct 2026

6 Dec 2026 (Sunday)

26+ National Law Universities; five-year integrated programmes at Faculty of Law, DU

AILET 2027

Opens 7 Aug 2026

13 Dec 2026, 2–4 pm

National Law University Delhi only (BA LL.B., LL.M., Ph.D.)

CUET UG 2027

Expected early 2027

Expected May 2027

Integrated law programmes at several central and state universities

CUET PG 2027

Expected late 2026

Expected Mar–Apr 2027

Three-year LL.B. and LL.M. at Faculty of Law, University of Delhi

IPU CET 2027

Expected Feb–Apr 2027

Expected Apr–May 2027

GGSIPU-affiliated law schools across the capital

LSAT—India 2027

Rolling, from late 2026

Multiple cycles, Jan and May 2027

O.P. The government-funded law colleges in Delhi are extraordinarily cheap on tuition, but Delhi living costs, hostel charges where available, private accommodation where it is not, and two years of entrance coaching add up to a real number that families rarely calculate in advance. A student who spends two lakh rupees on coaching to secure a low-fee government seat has not necessarily saved money.

Private universities in Delhi NCR generally charge more in tuition and less in everything else — campus accommodation is usually available and priced, transport is bundled, and merit scholarships are common and substantial. Before you compare two institutions on fees, build the full five-year figure for each: tuition, accommodation, transport, examination and one-time charges, minus any scholarship you realistically qualify for. The ranking of your options often reverses once you do.

The other cost worth pricing is the dropped year. A student who takes a second attempt at CLAT is paying a year of foregone earnings plus another year of coaching. That is frequently more expensive than the difference in tuition between a reach seat and a good anchor seat.

What Delhi NCR Recruiters Look for in a Law Graduate

Talk to hiring partners at Delhi firms and the same four things come up, none of which is your college’s ranking.

Drafting ability. Elective and specialisation strength runs across corporate law, criminal law, constitutional law, intellectual property rights and international law.

Three things distinguish it from a generic private option. First, the mentor panel is drawn from the leadership of Indian legal education — including senior academics associated with Gujarat National Law University, the Department of Law at Jamia Millia Islamia, the Institute of Law at Kurukshetra University, HP National Law University and Jindal Global Law School. Second, the programme is deliberately practice-weighted: regular moot courts, legal aid clinics, expert sessions with judges and senior advocates, and skill-enhancement certifications in contract drafting, corporate governance, IPR, investment law and cyber law. Third, the university runs student exchange and internship pathways with European partner universities, which is unusual at this fee level.

On outcomes, Geeta University reports 550-plus recruiters, 3,500-plus job offers and a highest package of Rs. 40 LPA across the university.
