Geeta University Restructures Traditional Academic Streams with Flexible “Design Your Own Degree” Model

In a departure from the rigid course structures typical of Indian higher education, Geeta University (GU) has implemented a Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) that fundamentally alters how students select their coursework. The university, operating under the Haryana State Private University Act-2006, is moving away from fixed academic streams to a model it calls “Design Your Own Degree.” This structural shift allows students to build custom academic profiles by mixing core technical subjects with unrelated vocational or creative electives.

Breaking the “Stream” Mentality

The core of this new framework is the university’s rejection of the traditional separation between arts, sciences, and commerce. Under the new system, a student enrolled in a B.Tech Computer Science program is no longer confined to technical labs. They can now formally accrue academic credits through “Passion Programs” and Open Electives that have no direct relation to engineering.

The university’s brochure outlines specific, unconventional combinations made possible by this system. For instance, students in the School of Hospitality can take modules on taxation to understand the financial side of kitchen management. Conversely, engineering students can enrol in courses on “Fingerprint Science,” “Dietary Management for Youth Fitness,” or “Hip-Hop and Contemporary Dance Forms.” This approach acknowledges that modern professional roles often require a diverse set of skills that singular degree programs fail to provide.

Diverse Academic Schools

The flexible credit system spans across 11 specific schools within the university, offering over 70 distinct programs.
